Design Methodologies
Design methodologies are divided into five categories that are Divergence, Transformation, Convergence, Sustainability and Articulations and all these they have a meaning in the design and here we are going to look what they mean.
Divergence
Divergence: is to thinking and exploring about other possibilities to your problem by applying critical thinking through qalititative and quantitative research methods so you can create other possibilities for your problem solution.
|
For example the major problem that we have in our projection is the distance (form the projector to the canvas façade), the light pols were they are making us limited to a certain size and the light surrounding the building.
|
So with the help of Divergence we can come up with better design solutions.
|
Transformation
Transformation: When doing a design it is important that you experiment with new ideas and methods so to transform the idea so by redefining specification of design solutions they can lead to better guidelines for traditional and contemporary design activities.
|
So in our situation we are going to make a transformation in the way things are projected and in the way the building will look, we can find other transformation in the process of designing methods and developed new once.
|
Convergence
Prototyping possible scenarios for better design solutions that incrementally or significantly improve the originally inherited situation. (Wikipedia 2013) So Convergence helps you to come with a better design that from different ideas and design you can come up or merge to come up with a different and a better design. Convergence can be a merging of 2 or more items technology, designing into a one thing for example in a design there can be a convergence of video and illustration or the design can be interactive too even in technology today a mobile phone is a convergence thing because it does not call and messaging only but it takes photos you can browsing on internet and other things.
|
Definition - What does Convergence mean?
Convergence is the coming together of two different entities, and in the contexts of computing and technology, is the integration of two or more different technologies in a single device or system. A good example is the convergence of communication and imaging technologies on a mobile device designed to make calls and take pictures - two unrelated technologies that converge on a single device.) |
(www.techopedia.com/definition/769/convergence) in our mapping projection we can use this methodologies
to come up with a good design and best projection mapping ever for example we
can make that the projection comes interactive with the audience or we can use
video which interacts with the design its self.
|
Sustainability
Sustainability: is something that is remained sustained and with balance and can mean to be environmental friendly. In design sustainability is the managing of the process exploring, redefining and prototyping of design solutions continually over time.
|
So this means that the design you make has an evolution proses were it develops from a simple think to a design often it starts from our brain and than it evolves but the design has to be sustainable by finding solution exploring new methods over time to
|
remain up to date so your design will be contemporary and at a high level.
So we need to find the methods that are being used today to get best results and make a good design for the projection mapping. |
Articulation
Articulation the visual relationship between the parts and the whole. In our case the visual relationship of the projection with the building for example how the projection is going to interact with the building how accurate the projection is going to be with the building.
|
These means that each part is going to be united with the whole work by means of a joint in such a way that the joined parts are put together in design and styles ranging from exceptionally distinct jointing to the opposite of a high articulation (architecture).
|
Divergent and Convergent methods
Convergent is when you have information and with this information you come up with a solution as we know the information can be a question for example how we are going to project the projection exactly and precisely on the building? and the solution can be by taking a laser scan or by taking flat photographs etc.
So here in this situation we are finding information or given information to find a solution for or with this information. |
Divergent Methods were here you have a problem to solve and from this problem you find or come with a solution. So the problem is making you thinking of the solution you can find for it. For example a problem that we have is that we can’t project till the doors of the palace because if is done so the shadow of the people will show on projection.
But the solutions are or doing the projection from a high and project it at an angle or make barriers so the people will not walk to the point were the projection is going to be projected. |
These two methods can be lined together in this pattern: you have a problem so you find a solution (divergent) but to find a solution you need information (convergent). As we see these two methods can work together to come with a better result.

Product development
To develop a good product you have to look at past research, present findings and future directions (Shona l. brown, Kathleen M. Eisenhardt: Stanford University). To develop a good product the most important effect is to maintain these three findings together. First you have to find and research what has been done in the past, how things were made the technique they used (in owner case for the projection mapping we need to find what types off effects they applied how they projected the projection, difficulties and errors that were made) so with all this information you will have a good background study of that particular product. Than the next step is to find what is being done today in the present, how things are managed, problems that they have, programs that are being used and
|
guidelines for that particular product, so with all this information about that particular product you can come with a solution and an outcome for your product. This information helps you to create a better product from the ones that are in the market because you are going to analyse which things can be done better how can you change the mistakes and errors from the past and present, what can you develop and change in your product to have a better result solution than the ones produced today.
|
So all these three findings lead to a better idea, product and solution and in our case if we had look and researched about projection mapping done in the world and locally we are going to generate more ideas, try to avoid others mistakes, using effective programs and techniques and be more focused on what you are doing, and all these helps to bring out a different and better product in our case projection mapping.

Narrative
A narrative is the base of the written story were it will effect the thinking of the reader or viewer. The building of a narrative effects the design of the final product how it will looks to the public, the style applied dipending on the era and the story were it is happening.
According to the narrative type made for film or in our case projection mapping it will effect in the way special effects are introduced, which programs can be used to do the effects and to build characters (for example if for the film or projection mapping you are going to us 2D than you need to work with illustrator, Photoshop, after effects and other 2D programs, but I you are going to introduce a 3D environment, characters you need to work with 3D programs like Maya, Mud box and other 3D programs) so the narrative has a strong effect on every thing, and here we are going to look at the script given from Valletta 2018. |
